League of Arab States
It is March of 2015, and the League of Arab States (LAS) have agreed to meet and discuss the creation of a communal military force designed to protect member states from threats in Cairo, Egypt. During this summit, delegates will be defining the layout of this force, the chain of command, resource donation, funding, potential long term and short term goals, as well as which situations to intervene in. With the rise of extremist militants within the region, delegates must come up with a solution quickly. The diversity in economics, religions, and beliefs of the region and its inhabitants will play a vital part of decision making within this committee. Delegates are encouraged to look towards This committee will be fast paced and is designed for delegates with prior Model UN experience and firm understanding of Parliamentary Procedure.
NASA and the Space Race
When President Kennedy announced we would be entering the space race, the entire nation was more excited than ever before about the potential of America’s greatest scientists. The problem was that those scientists found out at the same time as the rest of the American Population that we had chosen to go to the Moon. This committee will focus on a group of NASA Scientists, Board Members, and Politicians involved in the Cold War Era “Space-Race” as they try to not only maintain a scientific and military higher ground with the USSR, but to also create national pride and raise public morale. The committee begins in 1960 and will follow NASA through an abridged 1960s timeline, starting at the beginning of manned space flight. Delegates have to work with a limited budget, develop technology, and of course, defeat the Communists in the propaganda war. We will focus largely on the politics of scientific research as the committee works within their boundaries, while still trying to accomplish the goals set by the public and their financial supporters. There is plenty of room to move in whatever direction delegates take the committee, whether more scientific or political (although ideally would feature aspects of both), and hopefully we can make for a unique specialized experience.
