SOCHUM
SOCHUM (Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee) is the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly and deals with social and humanitarian issues around the globe. The topic of the SOCHUM committee at BBAMUN 2016 is the use of child soldiers in conflicts throughout the world. This is a topic of vital importance, as the forcible recruitment of children is a blatant violation of children’s rights as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Examining case studies from militant groups in Africa and the drug wars in Latin America, as well as other regions of conflict throughout the world where child soldiers are in use, delegates will be expected to bring original ideas to the committee and implement them in a comprehensive resolution to address the prevention of forced recruitment by both nations and revolutionary/terrorist groups.
GATFSC
The General Assembly Task Force on Security Council Reform (GATFSC) will discuss the veto powers that are given to the P5 (China, France, United Kingdom, United States, and Russia). The P5 received their veto power at the creation of the United Nations after World War II, and discussions should center around whether these countries remain deserving of additional world power. Certainly the concepts of equality, as well as divisions between rich, poor, and rapidly developing nations should be discussed. This committee would focus on the ethics of veto power. This committee would aim to solve these problems through the implementation of comprehensive resolutions representing both original ideas and country positions.
WHO
WHO (World Health Organization) is the authority on international health issues and is a key to coordinating the work across a range of health topics. Finding attainable solutions to ameliorate the quality of health for this world is an essential element to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This WHO committee will tackle the issue of the Rising Threat of Non Communicable Diseases. 56% of all deaths in poor countries are currently caused by non-communicable diseases. It is expected that all delegates come with substantial research about various non-communicable diseases and have looked at nations of the world who have dealt with this issue. Come with a fresh look at a serious issue, so that resolutions can be passed which can effectively deal with this topic.
